Keep it short, but don’t keep it clean. If you write vanilla missionary position between old married lesbians you are welcome; if you write xenophilic alien fluid exchange through arcane circuitous plant-like genitals you are welcome; if you write anthropic sex priests who practice mystical BDSM with sacred inflation spells, you are welcome; if you write about beefy guys beating the crap out of each other and then exchanging heated frottage that they will never talk about, we’ve got you.

Editorial Idol S1!

Think your manuscript has what it takes to get through a gauntlet of editors? Here’s one way to find out!

Editorial Idol a fun, slightly brutal way of having your manuscript critiqued by industry editors. All stories are anonymous, read by our volunteer reader, and nobody knows whose is whose! The whole audience can listen to the feedback and learn what works and doesn’t work for our editors.

Here’s how it works:

  • You submit the first 250 words of your manuscript in advance of the event.
  • Your story will be read anonymously and out-loud to the panel of expert judges, Carl Engle-Laird, Andrew Leon Hudson, and Rebecca Bennet!
  • The judges will “buzz out” when they have heard enough.
  • When all three judges buzz out, the reading ends and they will provide feedback to the audience!

Will they read to the end? Will they ask to see more after the event? Nobody knows! Sign up to submit your story below or just come to hear the feedback and enjoy the drama, Saturday May 16th @ 6:30pm at the Westin Nova Scotia

The Charles R. Saunders Readings

Charles R. Saunders is the father of “Sword and Soul”, fantasy fiction based on African myth, history, and culture. Saunders was an author and journalist who lived much of his life in Nova Scotia, after relocating in 1969 to avoid the draft. The novels and essays he wrote here established him as a pioneer of Black speculative fiction.

The Charles R. Saunders Prize was established with the Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia to help support an emerging or early-career writer, with priority given to writers from equity-deserving communities.

In celebration of Saunders and his legacy in Nova Scotia, TriCon is proud to present readings from past Saunders Prize winners, as well as a lecture on Saunders’ contribution to fantasy from his biographer, Jon Tattrie (@tattriejon)!
